Svalbard part 2

14 June 2003:
After we went to the supermarket, we went for a walk to Bjorndalen. This is the valley next to the one we are staying in, and you can reach it using a path along the sea. On our way to Bjorndalen, we saw and heard the one and only songbird of Svalbard: the Snow Bunting. Wonderful Black and White, already decked out in his summer feathers.

The weather was wonderful and so was the walk, discovering new things everywhere. We also saw a beautiful male King Eider swimming in the sea. After 2 hours walking, it was time for lunch. During lunch a Kittiwake came to sit with us just 10 meters away. I quickly took a picture of him through the telescope.

Svalbard Reindeer

When we arrived back to our bikes at the end of the afternoon, there were a few reindeer grazing nearby. The reindeer on Svalbard are very tame. They have the strategy not to run away since that would expend too much energy. Because of this behavior, you are able to get very close to them.

15 June 2003:
Sunday: a day off! Today we climbed the glacier. There was still lots of snow. In some places it came up to our knees or higher. It was really very beautiful and very quiet at the top. We didn't see anybody else during our walk. All we saw was snow and ice and a beautiful landscape the whole day long!
